Communty Bathmasters Qualification Test

Date: 2025-11-10, 12:00

Qualification Milestone: First Community Bathmasters Certified in Ireland

With this successful event, the International Bath Academy (IBA) is proud to announce the certification of a devoted study group in Ireland, marking a new chapter for the Lithuanian sauna tradition in the region.

The Educational Journey

Over the course of several months, these students completed a comprehensive Community bath masters course. This program was designed to provide a deep understanding of the holistic sauna experience, covering essential modules such as:

  • Sauna Health & Safety: Principles of healthy sauna procedures and microclimate management.
  • Technique: Various types of sauna bathing, effective steam (garas) management, and traditional whisking (vanojimas) techniques.
  • Bodywork: Traditional body scrubbing, back massage, and classic sauna treatment flows.
  • Management: Efficient and traditional management of a family or community sauna environment.

The certification process in Kilkenny

The final assessment took place at a private sauna in the Kilkenny district. To ensure the highest standards, the examination was overseen by two senior lecturers from the International Bath Academy (IBA). This qualification was confirmed using the Traditional Family Sauna Examination Methodology, which balances practical skill with theoretical knowledge.

The Examination Standard (Methodology)

To maintain transparency and professional excellence, every IBA student undergoes a rigorous practical test:

  • Preparation & Performance: Each student is allotted 30 minutes to prepare their workspace and demonstrate mastery in Classic Whisking (Vanojimas) and Body Scrubbing.
  • Peer & Expert Review: The performance is evaluated by both lecturers and fellow students using a standardized assessment sheet. This communal evaluation fosters a safe and transparent environment for experience exchange.
  • Grading System: Participants are graded on a 6-point scale.
  • The Requirement: To pass, a student must achieve an overall average of at least 3.5 points.
  • Minimum Threshold: Individual scores for whisking and scrubbing must not fall below 3.0 points.

Objectives of the Qualification

The IBA certification is not just a document; it is a testament to:

  • Verified Skillset: Ensuring students possess real-world working skills.
  • Safety & Trust: Building a safe and friendly environment for professional practice.
  • Individual Excellence: Developing personal skills for working with sauna clients.
  • Professional Growth: Elevating the qualification of traditional practitioners to modern professional standards.
  • Path to Full Certification (Theory & Practice)

Important notice for candidates: To receive the official Community Bathmaster Certificate, students must complete both practical and theoretical modules.

We understand the dedication required to master these skills; therefore, students are permitted to take the practical examination even if some theoretical credits are still pending. However, to finalize the certification, all remaining theoretical assignments and questionnaires must be successfully completed within 90 days of passing the practical exam.

Themes covered

  • Basis of bathing techniques
  • Bodywork of the back

In this practical theme, we learn the basic techniques of gentle body touch and massage. Soft, relaxing touch is included in all basic sauna techniques and treatments - light bathing, body scrubbing, and massage. The skills on this topic will benefit further training that are included in the Professional Sauna Therapist training program.

    Skills developed in the workshop

    • Preparation for bodywork, laying a person down
    • skin stroking
    • warming rubbing
    • oiling the skin
    • working on the deeper subcutaneous tissue
    • ergonomics and safety of movements
    • effective transverse work
  • Classical whisking

A practical topic that is a natural extension of "Easy whisking". We apply the techniques we have already learnt more intensively and learn to apply them to different parts of the body.

This time we are working with a richer steam, as is usual in many saunas. During the workshop, we learn how to fully steam these parts of the body:

    • feet (lying down and lifting them up),
    • legs - thighs (lying down, lifting them up, turning them over),
    • knees,
    • shins hands - hands,
    • biceps,
    • arms (holding them up, lifting them up)
    • abdomen (swiping them up, stroking them,
    • chest (swinging) chest (swiping, stroking),
    • neck
    • sacrum (lower back)
    • shoulders, shoulder blades

Students are also taught general bathing strategy, ergonomics of bathing, principles of safe bathing.

  • Community bathmaster`s qualification

After completing the  Course, the student also completes an important phase of the Bathhouse Master's Course and is sufficiently qualified to be the Bathhouse Owner of his/her family. He is entitled to receive the corresponding certificate after a test of his knowledge and practical skills.

The basic skills of a family sauna bath attendant are body bathing and scrubbing in the sauna. The ability to do this shall be demonstrated and validated in a real hot sauna. The student's ability to perform the sauna procedures correctly is assessed by at least 2 professional IBA sauna practitioners with experience of teaching in the IBA programme. The assessments are made in the traditional sauna 6-point system by averaging the grades of different assessors.

There is a fee for the assessment. Assessment of the credit - pass or fail.

  • Conducting a traditional pirtis ritual

A practical theme where teache the following topics:

    • Sauna procedure strategy, number of visits, and intensity.
    • Bioresonance body heating.
    • Sweating promotion procedures.
    • Proper use of salt in the sauna.
    • Comfortable seating for people with special needs.
    • Children in the sauna.
    • Basic safety rules for the procedure.
    • Organization of wiping for a small group.
    • Organization of honey rubbing for a small group.
    • Skin scrubbing with birch branches.
    • Basics of sauna microclimate control.
This theme has additional information available only to logged in users.
  • Healthy steam bath procedure

The first practical theme(topic) of the Bath Masters course  is the Healthy Sauna Procedure. It is dedicated to learning about a healthy, bioresonant sauna. During the sauna, we go through a complete sauna procedure consisting of 4 stages:

    • introductory warm-up
    • sweating stimulation
    • Soaking in the steam and self-bathing

This workshop is essential for those wishing to continue their studies and further their knowledge, but it is also available simply to try a healthy sauna treatment in a good sauna (often with a good gourmet sauna stove).

  • Holistic whisking

A practical theme to learn and test the work of a sauna master. The first steps towards a new profession take place in a safe environment, in a good sauna, with the help of an experienced trainer. This topic is usually taught in the form of a sauna evening (a practical session in the sauna), during which the teacher introduces and demonstrates the main points of practical work in the steam room and the students try it out in practice. In this way, they have the opportunity to test themselves as future sauna practitioners and get a better idea of the level at which they would like to learn the sauna trade.

  • Self whisking

Important theme and one of major aspects of sauna education that is very often neglected by even prominent bath mastership teachers. Yet it is even more complex then whisking other person.

    This theme covers

    • initial warming of the feet
    • enhancing blood circulation
    • self massage with whisks
    • self whisking of shoulders, sides, back
    • ergonomics of self whisking
    • different postures: sitting, laying
  • Skin peeling

Practical topic covering the following subjects:

    • Production of sauna scrub mixtures,
    • Ergonomics of working with the body in the sauna,
    • Body scrubbing and rubbing

In the sauna, moisture and heat soften the skin, allowing the top layer of dead cells to be easily removed, along with any accumulated impurities. Exfoliated skin becomes smooth and soft, and the pores open up – now it is ready to absorb nourishing products and masks. Dry and thin skin should be exfoliated carefully, using gentler products, while oily, acne-prone, and impure skin simply needs exfoliation – it helps to restore its cleanliness and oil balance. However, this product should not be overused. By exfoliating the skin too often and too vigorously, we risk irritating it and upsetting its natural balance. For most people (remember, our skin is different), gentle exfoliation once a week is sufficient, while deep exfoliation should be done once every two weeks or even once a month.

  • Whisking techniques

    Relaksacinio vanojimo mokymas
Dry training  - individualized teaching of effective movements

We teach a student the basics of warming: to warm the client's body safely and evenly and gradually cool him so he can safely and calmly leave the hotroom without the supervision of a bath master. Such treatment can also be performed as a full bath procedure in cases when the client is tired and wants to rest and relax.

    Content of the training:

    1. Basic whisking movement clacification
    2. Contactless techniques
    3. Light superficial techniques
    4. Warming of the underskin and muscles

We work with small group and provide individual training.
