About us
International Sauna Association pursues the goal of publicizing the sauna and promoting its use on a global scale by rallying supporters of sauna activities in different countries. This goal is served e.g. by acceptance of the Definition of Sauna recorded in Aachen 1999 taken in order to promote the scientific study of the sauna from e.g. such viewpoints as social history , folklore , medicine and technology. A particular emphasis is given on the collection and compilation in archives of the results of such scientific studies as well as other written material on sauna.
The goal is also served by organizing International Sauna Congress every fourth year. ISA is participating in several sauna events globally by sending material , arranging presentations , material etc. One important area is to deliver suitable material to the members as well as to the media. Also the opening of www.saunaliteratur.de and the updating of that data base is an important task. ISA is actively participating to the standardization at least on European Union level together with the manufacturers in the member countries. The expertise of ISA could be used by the manufacturers whenever needed . This includes also the possibilities to give presentation in the international events where sauna is playing a role and in cooperation with the local member organizations as well as international sauna related organizations like International Bath Academy. The creation of sauna literature in several new languages is also something that ISA has been and is going to be involved.
In Europe there are several languages needed for sauna information as well as in other parts of the world. Partly with the support of ISA one Finnish sauna book has been translated besides English and German also in Russian, Japanese and now we expect that also Chinese and Korean versions are coming out in 2014.

History
International Sauna Association is an association of national and other sauna societies and related organizations as well as private people. It was founded first time in 1957 with the domicile in Germany but the real operations started in summer 1977 in Helsinki. Then it was decided that the domicile of the association is going to be Helsinki. From the founding members Austria , Germany , Japan and Finland have been continuously members and are also called founding members. Besides those there are today 13 other members.
