Microclimate of traditional steam bath

Date: 2025-01-08, 21:00
Organizer : Lithuanian Bath Academy
The traditional steam bath is one of mankind's earliest inventions, allowing homo sapiens sapiens to inhabit areas where the temperature is below freezing for most of the year and where the water needed for life cannot naturally remain in a liquid state, turning into ice. Fortunately, man has learnt to harness the renewable energy of burning wood, storing it in stones and using it for his own purposes. In essence, the sauna is a heat accumulator, a microclimatic oasis of "paradise" and a sanctuary, which has allowed for the performance of all the procedures that are culturally relevant, from the cleanliness of the body to complex social rituals.
The microclimate of the sauna must not be "good" in itself, but must be in line with the way people feel in the sauna, including the "do no harm" principle. In many saunas it is possible to create a good microclimate, but it is not the same as the effort and time spent. Creating a microclimate starts with an understanding of what it should be. What should the sauna atmosphere be? What is an "atmospheric sauna"? What are the most efficient heating methods and how do they affect people? All of these questions are relevant to both the consumer of a gourmet sauna and the steam facilitator - the sauna operator.
Many people are used to controlling the indoor climate only by temperature. In a sauna, the other parameter - humidity - changes much more frequently and strongly. And we are there without clothes to protect us. These two facts alone are enough to "mess with your head".
